FAQ: What is the difference between the "Link Columns", "Copy Columns" and "Move Columns" options in PowerCenter Designer?
Answer

In the PowerCenter Designer the following options are in the Layout menu:

  • Link Columns
  • Copy Columns
  • Move Columns

The column options vary depending on the tool being used as follows:

Mapping Designer and Mapplet Designer

Layout > Link Columns

When you drag ports from one transformation to another, the Designer copies the port description and links the original port to its copy.
If you drag the port to a port that already exists in the other transformation the ports are linked and no copy is made.

Layout > Copy Columns

When you drag ports from one transformation to another, the Designer copies the port description but the ports are not linked.

Note:

Link Columns and Copy Columns are mutually exclusive.

Source Analyzer and Target Designer

Layout > Link Columns

When you drag ports from one source or target to another, the Designer creates a relationship between the two sources or targets based on the ports being linked.
When you drag a port into an empty port, the Designer copies the port and creates a relationship between the two sources or targets based on the ports being linked.

Layout > Copy Columns

When you drag ports from one source or target to another, the Designer adds the port and does not create a relationship.

Layout > Move Columns

When you drag ports from one source or target to another, the Designer adds the port in one source or target and removes it from the other source or target.

Transformation Developer

Layout > Copy Columns

When you drag ports from reusable transformation to another, the Designer adds the port to the other transformation.
